What Can I Expect in Therapy?

In therapy, you can expect someone who has an acceptable understanding of your difficulties, listens keenly, and shows complete respect.

We will work collaboratively toward your goals, not mine.

As your psychologist, I will check regularly on how you feel about the therapy process and our working relationship. There is almost always some humor and laughing, but it will not be entirely easy nor meant only to make you forget your problems momentarily.

Therapy will end with you having a resolution or better understanding of the problems we have addressed.

I strive to leave you with clear ideas on how to handle future stresses in an effective manner.

How Does Therapy Work?

The methods I use include cognitive therapy, behavioral activation, systems relationship therapy, mindfulness training, problem-solving therapy, and good old supportive counseling.

To simplify, it means that we will look at how you can:

  • Do more of what gets results and less of what doesn't.
  • See how your behaviors may be eliciting the behaviors in others you do not want.
  • Communicate more effectively.
  • Stay aware of your emotions.
  • Balance the desire for intimacy with autonomy and privacy.
  • Focus your attention on what is meaningful in your life and away from senseless worrying.
  • Improve your effectiveness in solving problems.
  • Come to peaceful terms with the things you cannot change.

Some common issues that people seek therapy for include:

  • Depression
  • Social anxiety
  • Relationship issues
  • Job stress
  • Anger management
  • Trauma
  • Bereavement or loss of a loved one
